Apparently a fantastic day was had by all at Cheltenham Festival this year. A chosen few won their place by merit and were taken to Cheltenham on Champion Hurdle Day to enjoy the delights of a fully hosted lunch and a fanstatic day of racing. Luckily the weather held and as you can see from the photographs, they did watch the horses, despite the lure of alcohol and food!! an excellent day out and certainly well deserved for all those who went, attached are some photos from Janesh who put his Nikon D300 skills to good use and took some awesome shots of the action. Lets hope there is a similar chance to go next year as it proved a very successful day, although I understand the winnings could have been better.......

Afghanistan - The First Multimedia War
John D McHugh has just returned from Afghanistan (again). But this trip was different. McHugh explains “this was the first time that I was using the same camera to shoot my stills, my video, and record all my audio,” the camera, of course, was the EOS 5D Mark II.
“I have often carried more gear, more weight, on patrols than the soldiers I am reporting on,” says McHugh, “because I work in multimedia. I would have a couple of stills cameras around my neck, a video camera in one hand or on my shoulder, and an audio recorder in my other hand, or taped onto my helmet.” McHugh will show a selection of stills, video, and audio slideshows that he produced in February 2010 in Afghanistan, using only the EOS 5D Mark II. He will also talk about the benefits and challenges of using a single camera for all his work, he will share his thoughts on why he believes multimedia offers so many exciting possibilities to all photographers, not just photojournalists.
Byron Wijayawardena, Pro-Apps Product Specialist Apple (UK) Limited
Byron will be giving an Aperture 3 demo to show how photographers can use the new Slideshow tool with pictures and video as a storyboarding tool, or to create simple narratives using high quality imagery and video, all on Canon cameras of course, and Final Cut Studio Demo to show how you can take your projects to the next level.

Calumet at Focus on Imaging 2010
The stand at Focus on Imaging before the crowds arrived.
An excellent 4 days at Focus - busy throughout the show and a very good result for the vendors we had on the stand - Powerstation, LaCie, Steadicam, Edirol/Roland, Sennheiser, Tiffen DFX, Genus and Calumet Own Brand.
We had printer demos going on using Epson and Canon printers which proved very popular. All the vendors on the stand were kept busy all day everyday providing their pearls of wisdom and tips and tricks on how to get the best use out of their particular pieces of equipment.
Genus were popular with their new HD DSLR rig and the swanky all-in-one ND filters, that can be rotated to produce the desired amount of density - and they are threaded so no need to add clumsy adapters!
We liked the winning Panasonic stand and those of us that got a chance to check out the new 3D TV were very impressed and we were delighted the Bowens stand won a Highly Commended - congrats guys!
Lots and lots of album/image mounting stands at the show this year, seems to be a very cutthroat industry there! Rather a saturated market now we think.
Thank you to everyone who made it onto the stand and supported us, we hope you enjoyed the show as much as we did and look forward to next year!

Alamy Seminar, Nottingham, update.
Dear reader, I do hope you'll forgive me for re-posting this article about our Alamy seminar, however I do feel that keen amateur photographers, and professionals should be seriously considering using Alamy to earn an extra income!
Having followed Pete Jenkins' (the Alamy tutor) advice, I have made my first sale on Alamy. A media Company has paid $290 dollars to use one of my quite ordinary images of a church in Ilkeston.
I only have 200 images online with Alamy, and have only been taking it seriously since Pete Jenkins gave his first talk, on Alamy, at Calumet Nottingham. Pete Jenkins is a lifelong career photographer, he has worked for the major newspaper titles, ran his own photo agency, and provided editorial and commercial photography. He is a customer, and friend, of the Nottingham Branch. We are always keen to support our local customer base, and many of our seminars are hosted by local photographic experts - such as Pete.
I hold down a busy job managing Calumet Nottingham, yet I'm glad I found the time to put some images online with Alamy. This will be an excellent extra income, in the longer term, that will help pay for extra camera kit.
I cannot recommend Pete Jenkins' Alamy seminar strongly enough. I will be glad to share my own modest experience, but do get yourself on the seminar on 11TH December, Calumet Nottingham.
Phone 0115 9586888 (Nottingham Branch) or 08706 03 03 03 (Direct Sales) and quote ZSMNOT0046 and book before the end of November to receive the early booking price of £30 for the Alamy seminar (normally £45).
Regards,
Jason Batterham

Land Rover Seminar "Live Shoot" with Tim Wallace
Supported by Hasselblad, Nikon, Epon, Profoto and Lowepro and a scattering of Calumet staff, seminar attendees were taken to the Land Rover off-road area where Tim took them through the Land Rover & Lighting set up and processes involved in getting that one amazing shot.
Despite a chilly wind and threatening skies, the weather held off and thankfully remained dry for the duration of the seminar.
During the afternoon, the group was split into 2, with one group working on the parked Land Rover and another group working on a Land Rovers being driven round the course for the attendees to structure their own photography and work out how to take the best shots themselves.
All in all an excellent day - thanks to everyone involved for their hard work and effort !!
Drummond st and Manchester 70th Celebrations
A big thank you to all our staff, customers and key suppliers for making our 70th Anniversary Celebrations such a big success. the events were held in London at our Drummond Street store and in our Manchester store during the week beginning 5th October.
There were record numbers of customers attending, who took full advantage of the demonstrations and knowledge imparted by the key suppliers who attended the events - Canon, Nikon, Lowepro, Bowens, Epson, Fuji, Sigma, Hasselblad, and onOne. Sensor cleaning "while you wait" was also offered and proved to be extremely popular as were the Bowens lighting demos.
Wine and snacks were served up in the evenings to those who had either stayed the distance or made the effort to come along after work. Altogether two fantastic, busy and exhausting days! Thanks to everyone who attended and we hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did - till the next 70th!!
New Canon 1D Mark IV
Canon is bringing DSLR video to the next level, literally. Today marks the introduction of the EOS 1D Mark IV, the first of this legendary pro line to feature full 1080p HD video. But that's not the only way the camera expands the potential of your photography.
When a split-second can make the difference between a front-page shot and one that sits in your archive, the 1D Mark IV ensures the height of responsiveness. Pushing the limits of ISO and featuring fast new autofocus technologies, the camera is a dream for sports and wildlife photographers. Due out at the end of December.... watch this space!

Nikon has annouced the new high-speed D3S with 720p HD video and a completly re-designed 12.1 MP Sensor.
The D3S features a completely re-designed 12.1 effective megapixel image sensor. The large pixel pitch, with a completely modified inner structure, means that the D3S can capture images under light conditions which were previously believed to be impossible. The seven stop ISO range of 200 – 12,800 enables image and movie capture in extremely low ambient light conditions which is essential for today’s news and sports photographers.
Further proof of the D3S’s incredible capacity for low light photography is the fact that it is the first camera to offer no less than three additional ISO boost levels, up to Hi-3, (ISO equivalent of an astounding 102,400).
The D3S delivers a new look and feel to the emerging trend of DSLR movie capture and exploits the creative depth-of-field effects offered by the large FX-format sensor and the benefits of wide aperture NIKKOR lenses, the lens of choice for the world’s leading photographers. Instant and intuitive in use, the D3S’s D-movie function is prioritised for high productivity. Movies are captured at 720p/ 24fps in motion JPEG with stereo sound using the input jack. The file format enables a unique ‘Save Selected’ frame option that enables the user to shoot video freely, secure in the knowledge that a still image of a key moment can be transmitted as well.
